Re: Caledonia Models?

Model Rail was only held there the once after a fire in the shops in front of McLellan Gallaries. Can't recall the year but it snowed that weekend. Been in the SECC ever since.

Re: Caledonia Models?

Yes, Allan. I have several transfers from those days, thank you. Jim Grindlay indeed had a shop in St Enoch Square, upstairs as I recall. I was only ever in it once. Jim S When I moved to Glasgow in 1982 SMS were in a unit in the Anderston Centre basically above the bus station as was. I recall it ...

Been meaning to post this for a week but I took the attached on the Rapido stand @ Model Rail last week. Although 'just' "engineering samples", they look very nice at a first glance.

Re: 812 Class from Rails of Sheffield.

There is currently up for auction on eBay a Rails 828 (as preserved) at what I consider to be an eye-watering opening price: £535.50. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/386739568990 if that does not deter you. On the other hand Rails are now selling the LMS version for £149.95 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/154...

Re: Carriage stock converted into vehicle/motor car carriers

Ross Many thanks for that. Following your lead I asked Noel Coates, a fellow member of the LMS Society, who is very knowledgeable on the L&Y. He gave me chapter and verse on these vans. I'm hesitant to post here as it is a bit off-topic but can PM (or post if folks are OK with it). Synopsis is c...

Carriage stock converted into vehicle/motor car carriers

Wearing my LMS Society hat, we have just received this enquiry ; "Hello, I am looking through my collection of Midland/LMS books. A friend of mine has asked me if I know of any records or photographs of pre-grouping carriage stock converted into vehicle/motor car carriers. Can someone suggest a...

Re: Patch painting of coaches

Can I also draw folks' attention to this photo of a D122A corridor brake third from page 260 of Mike's carriage book? This also shows evidence of patch painting during renumbering - the panel between the two set of van doors has been painted to obliterate the 1st LMS number (19115) as has I think, t...

Following up from John's post, obviously my remarks only apply to original material. Sale of any form of copy would be in breach of both John's and the CRA's copyright.

Would tend to agree with Lindsay. While obviously it would be better if the CRA were to make a sale, if someone is willing to pay the asking price then so be it.

Re: Train @ Kingsknowe

Allan Thanks for the contribution but I'm not sure about that - I think the second arm is lost against the sky. Please remember that this photo is scanned from a book and while the reproduction therein is quite good, detail is inevitably lost. A position of 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock would mean main li...

Train @ Kingsknowe

Attached is a photograph of a Caley train crossing the Union Canal at Kingsknowe on the western outskirts of Edinburgh. It comes from Gutherie Hutton's book 'The Old Union Canal' (Stenlake , Catrine, 2017, ISBN 9781840337815). It is unattributed and merely states the date as being pre-1923. But I'm ...

Patch painting of coaches

The attached photo comes from Mike William's excellent book 'Caledonian Railway Carriages'. (Lightmoor Press/CRA, Lydney, 2015. ISBN 9781 911038 00 9). To quote the text "This H.R. Norman photograph, taken at Inverness on 16th June 1934, shows one of the four postwar Diagram 106 Semi-corridor C...

Re: Mistakes in "Caledonian Railway Miscellany".

I was told by the folk who own the mill that the Cardean Estate was sold as a lot together with another nearby estate. (Was told its name but can't recall it right now). Apparently the new owners decided Cardean House needed too much work done and chose to live in the house of the other estate. This...

Yes - you will always get mistakes in books and/or new information will come to light but what a delight this book is. A real triumph on which Michael is to be congratulated. Plates 379 and 380 particularly tickled my fancy as I had just returned from a week spent in Perthshire at Cardean Mill. As t...
