It's a bit like a water tap, then, isn't it. The tap doesn't turn the water on, it keeps it off until you open the tap and allow the water to run as it 'naturally' would. Graham

blue spray paint

Hi folks, I parked next to a Hyundai at the supermarket this morning. It was a blue colour that seemed to me to be every close to the later blue used on CR locos. I think Hyundai call it electric blue. Expert opinion, please, subject to all the stuff on practices of mixing it every morning, etc. Bes...

Re: Engine shed door colours

Hi folks, I'm into modifying a Metcalfe goods shed into a CR timber one. Much scoring and painting going on. In addition to the great information above, I find I cannot trace any reference to the colours inside a timber goods shed. Would the timber inside be the same as the outside or a lighter colo...

Re: Caledonian Railway Staff List

On people being buried miles from home, I notice on my walks through Tynemouth Cemetery (north of the River Tyne) that there are several, maybe dozens, of memorials to people who are stated to have lived south of the river in the 19th century. The Tyne represents a major cultural barrier, so it does...

Re: DJH 812 class

Following John's reply, I attach photos of the 812 class conversion/kit-bash from the BEC 700 class and the Caley coaches 652 class. The former has a Triang 123 tender, heavily modified, which has just been fitted with new steps which need tweaking to narrow them down at the front. I am toying with ...

Re: DJH 812 class

I'd be interested in why people are still keen to build 812s now that the R2R version is available. I have a Caley Coaches version built as a 652 of which I am very fond and may build another. But I thought I was just eccentric. I have a problem with the R2R engine as it would show up my own kit-bui...

Re: PopUp model CR Signal Box (southern division type S4) kit, and model kits of Brechin Station

I believe some of the solid walls were 14", a brick and a half thick, so the header butted up against the inside of a stretcher. I lived in a house in English Garden Wall Bond (in Tyneside) where the solid walls were 14" up to the bedroom floors and then 9" above. I assume the inner 4...

Re: 812 Class from Rails of Sheffield.

Hi Folks, I saw one of these at the club last night and ran it on my incomplete layout. It is a lovely thing. I was very impressed with the tender pickups using split axles as the source of current. This posed an issue for me, however. My points demand a 14mm back to back measurement for the wheels ...

Re: Engine shed door colours

Thanks. Here's a picture of the current state of play on the caley-fying attempt on an available kit. I bought the Metcalfe stone single track engine shed kit (PO331/2) and a pack of the matching stone paper which comes with a sheet of matching roofing slates. I have no connection with the firm. I w...

Engine shed door colours

I've searched through this topic to no avail so am daring to ask. I am Caley-fying a Metcalfe Engine shed kit and would like to know what colour the following would have been, please: The main doors over the rails, inside and out. The workshop door from the shed, on the shed side. The small door int...

Re: 4-wheel Drummond Passenger Brake Van 1883 Dia 4 - Decent Models instructions

I've just enjoyed building four, including two brakes, for lockdown number 2. I experienced some difficulties but they were manageable. The curved lower panels to be fitted to the lower part of the coach side, also curved, was a bit of a problem. The curves should be made with a roller but the one I...

Livery for former WCJS stock

Sorry to be dense but, when former WCJS stock was allocated to the Caledonian, was it repainted, lettered and numbered as normal CR stock? I can't find any reference in the livery or carriage books to the contrary so I assume it was. Graham

Thanks for that detailed answer, Donald. I am full of admiration for those who understand arcane topics and try to pass on hard-won data in a readable (?) form.
