This might at first appear to be a GSWR query but look at the route specified on the ticket. Issued in March 1935, it belongs to a collector friend Ian Gardner. We are bereft of ideas as to why such a tour would be marketed other than as a regularly available seasonal circular tour but the ticket makes no mention of this other than to advise the traveller to 'return as per bill'. It also seems a bit out of season to undertake such a trip.

Perhaps it was merely to indicate Caledonian route rather than G&SWR one, and the excursionist would travel via Lockerbie. The ticket printer's geographical knowledge might have been rather basic, or more likely, they had a standard printing block set up for Caledonian section excursions from Carlisle with the destintation changed as required.

I think you'll find this is a Caledonian standard ticket with just the heading altered to L.M. & S.R. Consequently it prescribes the route the Caley would have demanded before 1923, avoiding any competitors.

But surely the normal Caley route from Carlisle to Dumfries would have been by Lockerbie and the Dumfries branch from there.

They were going by the scenic route - Annan and Upper Clyde valleys (4 times, twice in each direction)! :D :D

Have as good a Christmas as is possible everyone, while keeping yourself and your loved ones safe.
