Mystery Photo

Post by Keith Fenwick »

The attached is part of the Cumbrian collection and came with others from Scotland, several of which are on the Waverley route, although this one does not look like that line. One suggestion is that it could be near Cobbinshaw. Can anyone identify the location? The loco is 45478.
Regards
Keith

Fogman's cabin and brazier bottom right, plus a view from an overbridge, so there must be a distant signal just out of view. I'm afraid I don't know where it is though ...

For what it's worth, Keith, that's a single digit shed code.

I disagree with this comment. Per "The Xpress Locomotive Register Vol 2" 45478 was based at Inverness, Perth, and Polmadie in the period 1957 onward. When blown up as much as possible I think the shedcode might be 66A Polmadie.

I would suggest this is taken from the overbridge entering Ravenstruther on the road from Carstairs (A70), with the fogman's hut protecting Lanark Junction.
The field with cattle in the background is now the site of the Cloburn Quarry Railhead, former coal loading plant.
45478 was a Carstairs (66E) loco in 1965.

The photo was taken in the 1960s as there is a Overhead Wire warning flash on the tender.

It is a Down train. Looking at Google street view from the bridge, most of the photo fits but I cannot match the trees in the background of the photo. They seem to be a bit high in the photo compared with street view. But that might just be perspective.

For a modern shot of the suggested location have a look here - https://www.railscot.co.uk/img/54/530/

Also,
The Bradford Barton Volume - London Midland Steam North of the Border by Derek Cross has a shot of the 'Three Summits Railtour' of 1963 with 103 and 57581 at the location with an electricity pole in the same alignment as the 45478 shot.

Many thanks for the answer, which is quite conclusive.
